Where it all started...
from a brick pit to a regenerating sand quarry.........
The MOSAIC Trust was established in 2000 to manage the 100 acre site donated by Hanson to the local community. The Trust aims to:-
-
protect the biodiversity
-
be available as a first hand learning resource for children and adults
-
be accessible for the wellbeing and enjoyment of the local community
It promotes environmental awareness by caring for the wonderful 'mosaic' of species rich habitats which have regenerated on the old sand quarry.
These include ponds, woodland, heathland, grassland and scrub.

Please enjoy the reserve but help us to look after it by respecting the habitats for future generations (of people and wildlife)
ACCESS-
-
You can access the reserve via footpaths from Kings Wood, Austerfield Village and High Field Lane. Wheelchair and buggy access is from pedestrian entrance next to Austerfield Centre and the dog poo bin.
YOUR SAFETY -
-
Please don't walk on the haul roads (which belong to Hanson) as lorries still use them.
-
Only cross at designated crossing points. The active quarry belongs to Hanson and therefore for reasons of safety, remain private and must not be entered.
-
There are several deep ponds on site so take care of yourself when passing by them and make sure everyone in your party is aware of the dangers.
DOGS-
Well behaved dogs are welcome.
Please be responsible owners and be aware that:-
-
Children from the Austerfield Centre and Hoglets day care use the reserve daily so please respect their space and put your dog on a lead when near them.
-
Don't assume all children love dogs.
-
Please pick up the poop so the children don't as they hands on, explore and learn about the natural environment. Please do not leave poo bags anywhere in the reserve.
-
During nesting season (March-July), a dog running loose will disturb ground nesting birds and caused the adults to abandon the nest.
LITTER- As the reserve is private land we do not have any litter bins so please take all your litter home with you
PARKING-
Weekends on the road even if the gates may be open. (you might get locked in)
Weekdays gates might be closed at 4.30.
(They are not our gates so we have no control)
